San Jose, CA – Lumileds today announced it was named a Green Supply Chain Award winner for 2019 by the Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine. The award honors companies that make sustainability a core part of their operations and supply chain strategy. “We are extremely proud to be recognized by Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine for our accomplishments in sustainability. This award is a testament to the contribution that Lumileds and its customers make towards creating a green economy, a mission that is central to our company purpose of making the world better, safer, and more beautiful with light,” said Jan van Rompay, Director of Sustainability at Lumileds.

As a global leader in innovative lighting solutions, Lumileds is an instrumental player in the LED revolution. Lumileds’ development of energy-efficient LED lighting solutions supports the urgent need to combat climate change. Over the last two decades, LED adoption has effectively reduced electricity consumption from commercial and residential lighting in the United States by 57%. A 2017 market analysis by IHS Markit estimated that Lumileds LEDs reduced total carbon dioxide equivalent emissions of lighting globally by 39 million metric tons – equivalent to shutting down 11 coal fired power plants in the United States.

Lumileds approaches sustainability through every aspect of its product lifecycle, from design to manufacturing to usage to recycling. In addition, the company has set aggressive targets for reducing the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations. As outlined in its 2018 Sustainability Report, the company has already exceeded several sustainability goals for 2020 including:

  • 41% reduction in CO2-equivalent emissions (20% goal)
  • 25% reduction in energy consumption (20% goal)
  • 25% reduction in water usage (20% goal)

Lumileds also extends its sustainability objectives externally to its suppliers through a Supplier Sustainability Declaration. The declaration sets standard labor, environmental, ethics, health and safety requirements to ensure shared commitment to responsible business practices. Compliance to these requirements is checked by independent and third party audits.

Furthermore, Lumileds has aligned its sustainability efforts with external frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and identified four SDGs to which it can make the most significant contribution: climate action, good health and well-being, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production.

This year marks the 12th annual Green Supply Chain award from Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “The entries serve as best-in-class examples for other companies to model and create value for their supply chains,” said John R. Yuva, editor of Supply & Demand Chain Executive.
