San Jose, CA – Lumileds, a global leader in innovative lighting solutions, has released its 2019 Sustainability Report, which details the its progress in supporting the transition to a worldwide low-carbon economy. In the report, Lumileds highlights how its lighting solutions contribute to positive changes in energy usage, safety, and health and well-being, supporting the company’s commitment to making the world safer, better, and more beautiful with light. Lumileds follows a formalized sustainability agenda that identifies specific priorities and tracks progress.
The sustainability objectives are based on creating value for customers through sustainable innovations, reducing the company’s operations’ environmental footprint, driving improvements in the supply chain toward compliance with the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) and preventing injuries. Lumileds has aligned its sustainability efforts with external frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and identified four SDGs to make the most significant contribution: climate action, good health and well-being, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production.
Lumileds’ development of energy-efficient, low-carbon LED lighting technologies supports urgent action to combat climate change. Lumileds LED lighting products have helped end-users reduce their GHG emissions by an amount that is 35 times greater than Lumileds GHG emissions in 2019. Compared to conventional lighting, Lumileds products emitted 49% less total carbon dioxide in 2019, saving 3.93 million metric tons of CO2 in the illumination and automotive market.
2019 was a transformative year for Lumileds. Despite economic challenges in the industry, our scientists and engineers continued to increase product performance while achieving significant reductions in energy use and water consumption, and we lowered our carbon emissions and waste.
“Maintaining a safe environment for our worldwide employees is the highest priority, and the current pandemic has only reinforced that intention. The 2019 report highlights our commitment to safety and our strong performance in occupational health and safety. In 2019 over fifteen thousand injury prevention actions were performed at our sites. Our global effort during the pandemic has been a stress test for our governance mechanisms and a demonstration of their resilience in managing extreme events,” said Jan van Rompay, Director of Sustainability at Lumileds.
