With roots stretching back more than 60 years, the Red Dot awards have established themselves internationally as one of the most sought-after seals of design quality. Philips X-tremeUltinon gen2 LED: blending style with technology

Lumileds LUXEON Altilon LED chips otherwise only available to Original Equipment Manufacturers give these LED headlight bulbs their industry-leading performance, with a color temperature of 5 800 Kelvin and up to +250% more brightness . But it is the elegant one-piece design that earned the judges’ recognition. The use of top-quality aluminum ensures a consistent high-lumen beam as stylish as it is powerful , while X-tremeUltinon gen2 LED’s compact dimensions make installation easy for keen drivers upgrading from halogen to LED. This aesthetic alignment of form and function reflects the design team’s belief that there is beauty in technology. The Red Dot award underlines their achievement. “Philips X-tremeUltinon gen2 LED possesses excellent quality that speaks for itself”, said the judges in their jury statement, praising its “highly consistent design” where “every detail has been executed to very high standards and in a user-oriented way.”

Speaking on behalf of the team, Jacques Leberre, Director – Product Marketing Management at Lumileds, said their objective had been to offer drivers “a step-change in quality and efficiency over current lighting products”. Aesthetics played an important role, too: “Performance was obviously the key factor, but we wanted to achieve that within an attractive, elegant design… For us, there’s beauty in technology.”

About the Red Dot Design Award

The Red Dot Award: Product Design has roots dating back as far as 1955 and determines the best products created each year. True to the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, a jury comprising roughly 40 members assessed the products individually based on the original. The strict judging criteria, which include level of innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics and durability, provide a frame of reference which the jurors then complement with their own expertise.
